ABOUT THIS EVENT

Nestled on the shores of Oakland's iconic Lake Merritt, the Lake Merritt Tango Marathon is a celebration of Argentine tango in one of the Bay Area's most beloved settings. Over the course of a weekend, dancers gather from near and far to share the floor, the music, and the magic that only a marathon can offer — hours of uninterrupted tango, deep connection, and the kind of dancing that stays with you long after the last cortina fades.

Whether you're traveling from across the country or just across the bridge, this is your invitation to slow down, tune in, and dance.

COMMUNITY STANDARDS

The Lake Merritt Tango Marathon is a space built on respect, warmth, and a shared love of Argentine tango. To keep that spirit alive for everyone, we ask all attendees to honor the following standards:

Respect on the Dance Floor

Every dancer deserves to feel safe and comfortable. Always ask before changing an embrace, be mindful of your partner's boundaries, and accept a declined dance graciously — no explanations are owed.

Consent & Physical Boundaries

Tango is a close-contact dance. That closeness is a privilege, not a right. Pay attention to your partner's comfort at all times, and never adjust, pull, or lead in a way that feels forceful or unwanted.

Inclusive Community

We welcome dancers of all backgrounds, identities, skill levels, and origins. Discrimination, harassment, or exclusionary behavior of any kind will not be tolerated.

Sportsmanship & Ego

Leave competition at the door. This is a social dance event. Unsolicited feedback, corrections on the floor, or condescending behavior toward other dancers is not welcome here.

Personal Conduct

Treat fellow dancers, organizers, and venue staff with kindness and courtesy at all times — on and off the dance floor.

Reporting

If you experience or witness behavior that makes you or others feel unsafe, please speak to an organizer immediately. All concerns will be taken seriously and handled with discretion.

We are all responsible for the culture we create together. Thank you for helping make this a space where everyone can dance freely and joyfully.
